order cut to size metal online

A precisely cut piece of metal is only useful if the dimensions going into the order are correct. Ordering cut-to-size metal online catches out first-time buyers because the decisions that matter most happen before checkout. A wrong measurement, an unclear tolerance, or a grade that does not suit the environment are all things that turn a straightforward order into a wasted piece and a wait for a second delivery.

This guide covers the four decisions that determine whether a cut-to-size order works:

  • Measuring correctly so the piece fits the space it needs to fill.
  • Choosing the material and grade that suits the application and conditions.
  • Entering dimensions accurately and understanding what cutting tolerance means in practice.

Get those right, and the process is quick, reliable, and repeatable.

Here is each step, in the order you will need it.

Measure the Space, Not the Object

If you are replacing an existing piece of metal, a shelf bracket, a panel, or a stair nosing, the instinct is to measure what you already have. That is usually wrong. The existing piece may have warped, been cut down on site, or never been the right size to begin with.

What you need to measure is the space the new piece must fill. Use a steel tape measure, record everything in millimetres, not centimetres or inches, and measure twice from the same reference point. Orders entered in the wrong unit are one of the most common sources of sizing errors, and there is no straightforward fix once the metal has been cut.

If you are working with aluminium sheet, our blog on bending aluminium sheet is worth reading before you finalise your dimensions, as bending adds to the flat blank size you will need to order.

For thickness, do not measure an existing piece and assume it matches a standard stock size. Thickness is a property you select from available options when placing the order.

Which Metal Is Right for Your Project?

The right material depends on what you are building and where it will be used. The five materials available through Click Metal cover most practical applications:

  • Aluminium is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making it suited to kitchen splashbacks, decorative panels, and applications where weight or rust is a concern.
  • Mild steel is strong, easy to weld, and cost-effective for brackets, frames, and workshop builds, but will rust if left uncoated or used outdoors.
  • Galvanised steel offers the same workability as mild steel, with a zinc coating that resists surface corrosion, making it the better choice for outdoor structures and other applications exposed to moisture.
  • Stainless steel resists corrosion without a coating, making it the practical choice for commercial kitchens, marine fittings, and architectural features where long-term hygiene or appearance matters.
  • Brass suits decorative metalwork, precision components, and applications where appearance and corrosion resistance both matter.

Different grades of the same material behave differently in use, affecting weldability, machinability, and surface durability over time. Each product page includes grade information and application guidance, and the team can advise before you order if you are unsure.

Enter Your Dimensions & Check Tolerances

When you input your dimensions, length, width, thickness, and quantity, each value is cut to your specification. The cutting tolerance across all Click Metal orders is ±2 mm. This means the piece will never arrive shorter than the dimension you specify but may be up to 2mm longer.

For most projects, this is straightforward. For tight-fit applications, such as a panel sitting flush inside a frame, specify 1 to 2mm under the maximum available space. This gives you working room without the risk of a piece that will not seat.

It is worth understanding why tolerances exist. The British Stainless Steel Association's (BSSA) guidance on BS EN 10259, the standard governing cold-rolled stainless steel strip, distinguishes between "normal" and "special" tolerance ranges and shows that width and length tolerances are all positive (no undersize) [1].

For width, the normal tolerance on a piece under 125mm wide runs from +0.5/-0mm at under 1mm thick up to +2.0/-0mm at 3.5–6.5mm thick. Length tolerances follow a similar pattern, as pieces under 2,000mm long carry a normal tolerance of +5/-0mm, tightening to +3/-0mm if a special tolerance is requested.

The practical takeaway aligns with Click Metal's own tolerance. Pieces can come out at the top of the specified range, not at the bottom, which is why specifying the lower end of your available space is the right approach for tight fits.

Two errors to avoid:

  • Entering dimensions in centimetres rather than millimetres.
  • Confusing length and width on asymmetric pieces.

Both are easy to do, but the cuts cannot be used. If you are ordering multiple pieces, each can carry its own dimensions within the same session. There is no need to place separate orders.

What to Expect Between Checkout & Delivery

Once your order is placed, the metal is cut to your specified dimensions and prepared for dispatch. Standard lead times run to 3 to 5 working days, with delivery via next-day courier once the order has left the facility. Full delivery charges, calculated by length, are on the delivery page.

Sheet and plate products arrive with a protective PVC film, which guards the surface during transit and handling. Remove it before fabrication or finishing. Edges are cut clean, but if a deburred edge is required for anything handled frequently or fitted into close contact with another surface, check the finishing options when placing your order.

If anything is unclear before you buy, our team can advise. Getting the specification right at the start is always easier than dealing with a cut that does not fit.

Four Decisions, One Order (No Wasted Cuts)

Before reading this, a cut-to-size order might have felt like a process with too many unknowns. These four steps remove that uncertainty. You know what to measure, how to specify it, and what to expect when the piece arrives.

Here is a summary of the decisions that matter:

  • Measure the space the piece needs to fill, not the object you are replacing.
  • Choose the material and grade that suits the job and the conditions it will face.
  • Enter all dimensions in millimetres and allow for a ±2 mm cutting tolerance.
  • If anything is unclear, the Click Metal team can advise on the specification before you buy.

Order multiple pieces in a single session, with each carrying its own dimensions.

Click Metal has been supplying cut-to-size aluminium, mild steel, galvanised steel, and brass to DIYers and trade professionals across the UK since 1994. Every order is cut to your exact measurements with a ±2 mm tolerance and dispatched within 3 to 5 working days. For bulk or specialist requirements, we can refer you to Dore Metals, our parent company and a nationwide supplier.
