Brass is a material that we are very acquainted with as a species, having discovered it over 2500 years ago. Despite it being invented so long ago, there are still many uses for the material in modern construction – showing that the traits of brass transcend the needs of builders across millenniums, let alone centuries.
So, just what makes it so special? Read on to find out.
The most obvious but least practical use for brass is due to its beautiful colouring – brass can be mistaken for gold to the untrained eye, and is also much cheaper than gold – making it perfect for ornamental décor such as engravings and framing.
Artists throughout recorded history have used brass as a medium for their art due to its beauty and relatively cheap price.
Ever noticed that many latches, bearings, hinges and zippers are made of a distinct, gold-coloured material? Yep, that’s brass, and it’s because the material is a combination of malleable and low-friction.
Due to its malleable nature, brass can be flexed and shaped into wires, sheets, foil and even more, while it can be processed in any number of ways - including being machined, cast, rolled, hot-stamped and drawn. This makes it particularly flexible and usable, giving the producer lots of control during the construction process.
Low-friction is why it is used in latches and hinges, to ensure that your doors and cupboards work silently and faultlessly.
Brass is resistant to a number of natural processes that might leave its mark on other materials, like extreme temperature changes. The material won’t warp and corrode even if left out in very high or very low temperatures, and the sun’s UV rays have no effect. It’ll maintain its shine for months after first application – making it a great decorative material with low maintenance costs.
