This page exists to answer one type of question quickly and completely: what is the EN, BS, DIN or US equivalent of a given grade, and how much does a sheet or length of that material weigh. It gives you a UK steel grade equivalent chart alongside stainless steel and aluminium equivalence tables, plus weight reference tables for every material Click Metal stocks. It is not a buying guide, so if you are still deciding which material or grade suits your project, our explainer guides linked throughout this page cover that ground instead.

Equivalence tables show the nearest match between standards, not an identical specification. Chemical composition and mechanical properties can vary slightly even where a grade is commonly treated as equivalent, so always confirm exact tolerances against the current standard before specifying a critical application.

Structural Steel Grades

EN 10025 against BS 4360

For a UK steel grade equivalent chart covering the modern EN 10025 designations against the older BS 4360 grades, the table below covers the S235, S275 and S355 ranges across their JR, J0 and J2 quality variants. EN 10025 is the current standard used on UK drawings and supplier documentation, though BS 4360 designations still turn up on older specifications and legacy paperwork, which is why both are shown side by side.

EN 10025 structural steel grades and nearest BS 4360 equivalents
EN 10025 Grade Nearest BS 4360 Grade Typical Minimum Yield Strength (MPa)
S235JR40B235
S235J040C235
S235J240D235
S275JR43B275
S275J043C275
S275J243D275
S355JR50B355
S355J050C355
S355J250D355

For a quick S275 S355 BS equivalent check: S275JR corresponds to BS 4360 Grade 43B, and S355JR corresponds to BS 4360 Grade 50B. The J0, J2 and K2 suffixes reflect impact toughness requirements tested at different temperatures rather than a change in yield strength, so the strength figure stays the same across each grade's variants.

These designations sometimes appear on older technical drawings and contractor specifications purely as BS 4360, and confirming the modern EN equivalent helps avoid ordering confusion when working from legacy documentation.

Stainless Steel Grades

EN, AISI, UNS and old BS designations

Click Metal's core stainless steel range covers grades 304 and 316. The table below gives the EN number, AISI/US designation and UNS number for each, alongside the historic BS designation where confirmed.

For a 304/316 stainless equivalent check: 304 equals EN 1.4301, AISI 304 and UNS S30400, while 316 equals EN 1.4401, AISI 316 and UNS S31600.

Stainless steel grade equivalents
EN Number AISI/US Designation UNS Number
1.4301304S30400
1.4401316S31600

Both grades are supplied with a brushed finish and a removable PVC protective film as standard, and both are cut to the exact length and width your project requires.

Aluminium Grades

EN AW against BS, US AA and DIN

Click Metal stocks four aluminium grades: 5083, 5251, 6082 and 6063. The aluminium grade equivalent chart below cross-references each against the old BS designation, the nearest US AA equivalent and the DIN designation. 5251 is supplied in its most workable temper for forming and bending, while 5083 and 6082 offer greater strength and corrosion resistance for structural, marine or outdoor use, and 6063 is more commonly found in extruded sections such as angle and box section rather than flat sheet.

Aluminium grade equivalents
EN AW Designation Old BS Designation Nearest US AA Equivalent DIN Designation
EN AW-1050A1E1050Al99.5
EN AW-5083N85083AlMg4.5Mn0.7
EN AW-5251N45052 (nearest, not exact)AlMg2Mn0.3
EN AW-6082HE306351 (nearest, not exact)AlSiMg0.5Mn
EN AW-6063HE96063AlMg0.7Si

As with the steel tables above, these are nearest matches rather than identical specifications. EN AW-6082's closest US AA equivalent is 6351, not an exact match, and the same caution applies to 5251 against 5052.

For an EN AW to DIN aluminium lookup on any of Click Metal's stocked grades, or for an aluminium sheet weight per square metre figure alongside these equivalents, see the Weight Reference Tables section below. For the reasoning behind which alloy to choose, see our guide to aluminium grades.

Weight Reference Tables

Use this steel weight per metre calculator formula to work out the weight of any sheet Click Metal stocks:

Weight per square metre (kg) = thickness (mm) x material density (kg/m³) ÷ 1,000

The density used for each material is mild and galvanised steel at approximately 7,850 kg/m³, stainless steel at approximately 8,000 kg/m³, aluminium at approximately 2,700 kg/m³, and brass at approximately 8,400 to 8,500 kg/m³ depending on the specific alloy. This weight formula works alongside the UK steel grade equivalent chart above, letting you confirm both the standard equivalent and the weight for any grade from one page.

The tables below cover the thickness range Click Metal stocks for each material, taken from the live product pages, along with the weight for a full-size sheet at the maximum selectable length and width for that material. Since sheets are cut to your exact measurements rather than supplied in fixed stock sizes, the full-sheet figure represents the largest size available at checkout; for any smaller size, simply multiply the weight per square metre by your actual area in square metres.
